An Overview of Tribology and its Industrial Applications
This paper highlights tribology's past and current utilization by considering the industrial applications. The study applied the working knowledge of wear, friction, and lubrication to truly understand the notion of tribology. The study shows the resistive force of relative motion in fluid layers and solid surfaces that slide against one another, the deformation, damaging, or gradual removal of materials from solid surfaces and the addition of lubrication reduces friction and wear cannot be overemphasized. Results show that tribology has been applied in the field of biomedical, green tribology, nanotribology, space tribology, and wind turbines. Machines present in the industry are the most important factor responsible for the functionality of the industry but the presence of wear and friction in the machines causes failure which in turn halts the production process. There is advancement in the knowledge of the science of wear, friction, and lubrication to combat its impacts in industries. The industrial application of tribology in the industry, includes the tribology of automobiles, gears, cams, bearings, and metalworking fluids. The reality is that both solid and liquid lubricants are required in most of these applications to ensure that the chosen lubricant can withstand the anticipated working conditions and favourably influence friction and wear reduction. It can be seen from this overview of tribology that it has contributed immensely to industrial application in its revolution to reduce the adverse effects of friction and wear in the industries thereby reducing cost and enhancing the increase in production.
