Green Technology Based Space Heating Solutions for Cold Weather Condition: A Case Study of Kashmir Valley
The inhabitant of hilly region such as in Kashmir valley suffers during winters due to freezing temperature. Moreover, the frequent power cut escalates this problem as the demand of energy for heating application and limited transmission capability increases manifold. Also, during winters the locally generated power from hydro power plants get affected due to low level of discharge. So all the power requirement usually fulfilled by northern grid via few transmission lines. In case of heavy snowfall these transmission lines also get disturbed while the energy demand still remains very high. Because of these erratic and poor quality power supply, the survival in the harsh winter becomes very challenging even for rich people. The peoples normally prefer less efficient heating methods like burning coal in small earthen pot (Kangri), burning wood in stove (bukharis, angithi etc.), install hamams in their homes or uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) based heaters. These methods are associated with several disadvantages such as toxic gases, the life and property is also on high risk. In this regard this paper presents some issues and challenges encountered during heating with some green technology based passive heating system.
