Endothelial damage and microvascular disorders occur as a result of inflammation and oxidative stress, with the increase of protein glycation, non-enzymatic glycation, and consequently the increase of end products in the tissues with hyperglycemia in diabetes. As a result of these events, peripheral and autonomic neuropathy develops in diabetic patients due to demyelination of Schwann cells and decreased neuronal blood flow and nerve ischemia.
