An experiment of video communication using active networks
In this paper, we report an experimental result on video communication over an active network. Video communication needs to be monitored and adapted when it traverses the IP environment. The emerging active network technology allows dynamic deployment of services including traffic monitoring and adaptation. Thus, the Active Network technology provides functionality, which is well suited to the handling of video communication. Our experiment on a PC-based testbed proves that monitoring and adaptation of video streams can be done in an efficient way, and the overhead due to the active network is not penalising. Based on this experience, we believe that the active network technology can be used at the networks' edges to offer customised and dynamically video transmission services in an effective way.
