Subject-oriented specification of IoT scenarios
Internet of Things (IoT), with its notion in industrial settings in Europe and particularly German-speaking countries also named Industry 4.0, is a major topic in the digitalization wave. Beside horizontal integration on the shop floor, this concept also includes vertical integration of technical layers and business layers, both within organizations and cross-enterprise. IoT networks comprising activities and communication of entities in both directions need to be modeled before being implemented. Earlier research investigates the capabilities of business process modeling approaches to model such IoT-aware processes. Results include suggestions, e.g., to extend BPMN by introducing additional language elements. Due to its nature, S-BPM seems to be a promising candidate for modeling IoT scenarios with its existing notation. In order to shed light on this assumption, we refer to the requirements related work formulated for IoT modeling languages and relate S-BPM features to them. Using an example, we show how selected requirements are tackled by S-BPM.
