Performance analysis of SPIHT algorithm for biomedical image transmission
Recent advancements in health care services demand reliable transmission of medical images such as MRI and CT for better diagnosis and treatment. The effective utilization of available spectrum is one of the requirements for stable transmission medical information. The proposed research work aims to increase the effective use of available spectrum for image transmission over Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Image compression techniques reduce the volume of data by removing redundancies, thereby resulting in effective storage and transmission. In this work, the wavelet based SPIHT algorithm is employed to compress the medical images without compromising on the image quality. The quality parameters, namely Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Compression Ratio (CR) are calculated. The suitability of this algorithm for different types of medical images is analyzed with variable bit rates.
