Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is characterized by flexible expansion, high quality of output voltage waveform, low switching frequency, low system loss and so on. Because of these benefits, the application of MMC technology to DC/DC converter has become a hotspot in recent years. This paper first introduces the topology and working principles of MMC and then summarizes topologies, operation characteristics and application prospects of different kinds of DC/DC converters based on MMC.
