As the field of alternative education becomes more A responsive to the needs of high-risk students, the role of counselor has also changed to meet those needs. Traditionally, counselors have provided general career and academic guidance; some current literature perpetuates that limited role for the counselor in alternative settings. In this article, I review selected literature on the counselor's role and identify and define a broader role for the educational counselor in alternative education.
