It has been shown by medical researchers that many neuronal diseases are related to bifurcation of ion channels. For example, sodium channel dynamics are involved in epilepsy, potassium and calcium channels have also been found to be associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It is also known that the threshold for normal spiking requires contribution from both non-linear (voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels) and linear currents (leak channel).
