Calculation of lightning flashovers on distribution lines
This paper presents an analysis of lightning-induced voltages on distribution lines considering insulation breakdown. Critical flashover overvoltages (CFOs) and volt-time curves of 15-kV and 25-kV class, pin-type porcelain insulators are determined from experimental tests with both standard and non-standard voltage waveforms. The tests are performed for configurations that are representative of medium-voltage distribution lines. Parameters are derived for application in the integration method, which is intended to model insulator performance due to non-standard voltage waveforms. The obtained parameters are used in computer simulations that show the influence of insulation breakdown on lightning-induced voltages considering different flashover criteria. The obtained results suggest the importance of an accurate flashover modeling for a correct assessment of lightning overvoltages in distribution systems.
