Both steady-state and dynamic characteristics of rare earth doped crystal thin film waveguide have been analyzed. Nd/sup 3+/ ion doped crystal waveguides are used for the amplification of light signals in the 1.06 /spl mu/m band and Er/sup 3+/ doped waveguides are considered in the 1.55 /spl mu/m band. The optical properties such as loss, fluorescence and absorption spectra have been investigated which determine the gain characteristics of the amplifier.
