Degradation of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles at High Temperatures: A Case Study
Electric vehicles are now a solution for the reduction of greenhouse gases and their battery lifetime is a fundamental aspect for its successful introduction. The batteries, mostly lithium ion, are subject to temperature-related degradation. In the southern region of Morocco in Benguerir, a pilot project of electric vehicles is aimed to test the introduction of this means of transport under specific climate conditions. The vehicles batteries were subjected to a test in real life conditions which allowed to establish a correlation between the degradation of the batteries and the high temperatures. This article presents the results of this study and shows how the high temperature of southern region may be hindering the development of this technology and the proposed solutions to guarantee the safety and extend the cycle life of batteries within electric vehicles.
