XLPE insulated cables are prominently used for medium and high voltage power transmission, and the cable joints and terminations are the significant regions for the defects. Experimental test have been carried out to study the characteristics of the power cable joint and end terminations. A 6.35/11kV XLPE insulated power cable with the heat shrinkable joint is subjected to the lightning impulse voltage. Partial discharge measurements on the cable before and after the imposed impulse voltage are presented.
