A hybrid equivalent capacity admission control algorithm for ATM congestion control
Admission control is an important method for congestion control in ATM networks. The authors propose an efficient hybrid algorithm for the calculation of the required equivalent bandwidth of a virtual circuit call given a traffic descriptor consisting of its class, average bit rate, peak bit rate and mean burst length. The algorithm is a hybrid of the class related rule and planar approximation methods thus accommodating homogeneous traffic as well as heterogeneous quality of service requirements traffic. The algorithm employs a limited statistical multiplexing method for improved network bandwidth exploitation. The combination of efficient operation for homogeneous virtual channels and a high statistical multiplexing gain for heterogeneous calls results in a more effective admission control strategy than either method alone.<>
