Community-Based Disaster Management Planning (CBDMP): A Study Along the Main Central Thrust (MCT), Uttarakhand
Nowadays, we all are very familiar with the term ‘disaster management planning’; however, the main purpose of this paper is to prove the efficacy of people's centric management of disasters. This paper explains the definition and impact of disasters, and deals with the community-based disaster management planning (CBDMP), components, challenges and finally explains it through a case study of Main Central Thrust (MCT) Uttarakhand. The MCT zone of Uttarakhand is highly prone to disasters. Almost every year, this region faces landslides, earthquake, forest fires, cloud bursts, etc. The study is based on the ground truth and observations made in the entire MCT zone of Uttarakhand. Authors collected the primary data with the help of PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) tools, and for data analysis the authors used different statistical techniques and software like GPS, ILWIS 3.7, STATISTICA 8, etc. Findings have shown that hazards turns into disasters only if we are not prepared to face such events. An excellent administrative set up, good planners and admirable community participation can mitigate the effects of hazards.
