While the existing IoT technologies can satisfy the requirements of a wide range of applications, there are still a large variety of scenarios that cannot be addressed. Energy harvesting (EH) IoT fills this gap. In this paper, the distinctions between EH IOT and existing IoT technologies are first clarified. Then the technical characteristics of EH IoT are analyzed. Next, according to these characteristics, the potential communication challenges of EH IoT are investigated.
