Estimation of Weibull parameters and wind power density at a wind farm site of Jogimatti at Chitradurga in Karnataka
Wind power density is a crucial parameter for estimation and comparison of the potential of a wind farm with that of other sites. Wind speed distribution data are needed for the evaluation of wind power density at a particular location. In this study, calculation of monthly wind power density (WPD) at different heights for Jogimatti site at Chitradurga in Karnataka, India are investigated statistically by using measured wind data provided by National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) for the year 2014. Three different methods namely empirical relation method, energy pattern factor method (power density method), and moment method are used for estimating the Weibull parameters k (shape factor) and c (scale factor). Monthly Weibull parameters are estimated using above mentioned three methods using wind speed data at 30 m, 60 m, 90 m, and 120 m heights. Using k and c, WPD is estimated at wind mast heights of 30 m, 60 m, 90 m, and 120 m for all the twelve months by using the above three methods. Air density is calculated for the chosen site by extrapolating temperature and pressure data of 10 m (NASA data in RETScreen Expert software) to 30 m, 60 m, 90 m, and 120 m heights respectively by using the relations available in literature.
