Terms and Definitions for Surface Acoustic Wave Devices

T HE Surface Acoustic Wave Devices Standards Subcommittee, which was formed in early 1982, accepted the long-term task of preparing and maintaining a comprehensive new standard for surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. As a first step in preparing this document, an extensive list of SAW devices terms and definitions has been prepared by the dedicated efforts of the subcommittee members with assistance and comment from many other members of the technical community. This completed list was then presented as a poster paper during the 1983 Ultrasonics Symposium for further dissemination and comment. This listing of terms and definitions for surface wave devices is consistent with the definitions prepared by the International Electrochemical Commission, document 49 (Japan) 74A, dated February 1984, of the Technical Committee no. 49 (Piezoelectric Devices for Frequency Control and Selection). Commonality with the IEC definitions was achieved where possible. The complete list is presented below for additional comment by readers of IEEE TRANSACTIONS O SONICS AND ULTRASONICS prior to formal submission to the IEEE Standards Committee.
