Presents the design and implementation of a digital video server for ultrasound services. It is based on a scalable network delivery of MPEG-1 encoded ultrasound sequences. In contrast with the current video delivery mechanisms used by Mosaic, this service requires a fixed time (2-3 seconds) for the start of viewing of a video sequence, and has no limitations on the length of the video sequence. However, the video-playing frame rates were comparable to that of Mosaic. The video server implemented can support real-time ultrasound and playback of recorded ultrasound sequences. This scalable network delivery mechanism will be extended to other types of dynamic medical sequences such as echocardiogram sequences.
