(1) The objection that a verb cannot be borrowed at all " except under special (e. g. political) conditions " was unfounded, as also (2) were the objections that a verb cannot be transferred "in a particular tense, and that tense only, from one language to another," and that a verb cannot "be 'borrowed' with its tensetermination affixed." (3) The third a of avao-axcT was manifestly due to wrongly assumed connexion with Osc. sakrim 'sacrum' sakahi ter ' sanciatur' aaxopo ' sacrum' etc. Parallels hereto were cited in support of this view. (4) Doubt was thrown on the alleged use of the symbol ^ to represent Osc. f; and further, granting for sake of argument that Fensernum had invented a symbol i =f, it was shewn that even so the S of avaScucer and Stories could not be this symbol i.
