Methods: Integrative literature review, with data collection in August 2018, in the MEDLINE / PubMed library. Results: 14 publications were identified whose textual analysis allowed the production of the following thematic approaches: I) Causes and consequences of the retention of foreign bodies in surgical procedure II) Prevention methods for the retention of foreign bodies in surgical procedures.
