Vehicle Displays and Interfaces Symposium Celebrates 30th Anniversary

THE VEHICLE DISPLAYS & INTERFACES SYMPOSIUM celebrated its 30th anniversary at the 2023 event on September 26–27 in Detroit, Mich. The SID Metropolitan Detroit Chapter has been organizing the annual conference since 1994 to support display and interface development, training, and manufacturing.

The technical symposium brings together scientists, engineers, researchers, and business professionals from the display technology, photonics, vehicle systems, academic, and OEM communities to experience cutting-edge innovations both in the presentations and exhibits.

In addition to display-related technologies in the fields of electronic engineering, physics, optics, human-machine interfaces, and other related disciplines, the symposium addresses the evolution toward electric (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs).

The conference kicked off with a keynote address from Daniel Cashen, chief engineer of Stellantis’ Smart Cockpit team, which navigated the trends and technologies that are shaping the cockpit of the future. Subsequent addresses from the likes of S&P Global Mobility, Display Supply Chain Consultants, and Omdia Research covered the display market growth and trends, such as prospective display designs and technologies.

The exhibitor's hall was a hive of activity, with 60 exhibits showing a variety of innovative technology demonstrations and samples. Industry experts presented in seven technical sessions featuring topics such as augmented reality head-up displays (HUDs), display metrology, innovative films, and a range of display technologies (projection-based, QDLED, OLED, FALD LCD, and microLED).

Of the many excellent papers that were submitted, Brian Hayden of Visteon received the Best Paper Award (“Combined Arrhenius and Inverse Power Law OLED Life Prediction Method”) for his discussion on the use of Arrhenius and Inverse Power Law to predict the life of OLEDs.

Yizhou Qian from the University of Central Florida and Haonan Zhao from the University of Michigan received $5,000 awards each for outstanding student research.
