Here, we report that inhibition using tetrodotoxin (TTX) and manipulations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors within the basal ganglia Area X or lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN) alter and prolong repetitive vocalization in Bengalese finches (<i>Lonchura striata var. domestica</i>). These results suggest that repetitive vocalizations are modulated by the basal ganglia and not solely by higher motor cortical neurons.
