Abstract
Reconciling the convenience of computerised transactions with privacy protection has become an important problem for the travel and tourist industries — particularly in those countries where privacy legislation has not yet been enacted. The American Express company has been working on the problem and has been lobbying in favour of privacy legislation while adopting a self-imposed code to protect the company's card-holders. This article is based on a speech given to the European Travel Commission on 6 November 1980 by Tommaso Zanzotto, Vice President of American Express Travel Division for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
