A note on a result of knuth or identities grow on trees

Abstract

In this note a multinomial extension of a result of Knuth is presented which allows very simple proofs of complicated multinomial coefficient identities. Proofs are given of the “multinomial theorem” and of Hurwitz's generalization of Abel's identity, the latter a well-known generlization of the binomial theorem.
