Abstract
Prehispanic Amusements from the Mexica and Maya Cultures and their Traces in Time
Abstract
Two of the most important Mesoamerican cultures –the Mexica and the Mayan– practiced diverse forms of popular amusements, which left traces found up to the present century. The article discusses the historical iterations of these performances with aid of Iury Lotman’s semiosphere theory, to understand how they change over the years in relation to shifting social circumstances. Until today, these social changes have been accompanied by continuous transformations in the ways in which Mexican indigenous people perceive and perform their dances, dance-dramas and stagings.
