Abstract

A unique and compact prototype piston engine using LaNi5Hx as an energy conversion medium, was developed.

It consists of two metal hydride containers, each having about 700 g (1.6 moles) of LaNi5Hx powder, a cylinder and piston, and two electromagnetic valves which work and synchronize with the movement of the piston. When one of the containers was heated in a hot water bath (80°C) and the other was cooled down to 20°C, the piston was kept working by the hydrogen pressure difference of about 10 kg/cm2 between them. On the average, 28 W of mechanical power output was generated for two minutes.

The theoretical conversion efficiency is 15.5%, and the roughly estimated experimental value is 7.7%.
