According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, “[o]ver 5.6 million people have fled Syria since 2011, seeking safety in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and beyond”. Turkey, which does not consider Syrians refugees, gave them temporary protection in 2014 (Directorate General of Migration Management [DGMM], 2022), and also hosts the largest number of Syrians—currently more than 3.6 million (UNHCR, 2022).
