Abstract

The total frictional torque in an externally pressurized bearing consists of two parts, one being that predicted from the Petroff formula and the other being associated with the change in the angular momentum of the lubricant. The analysis is fully confirmed by experiments with an air-lubricated journal bearing. It is shown that if all other parameters are specified, then the minimum total frictional torque is obtained when the clearance is chosen such that 25% of the total torque is required for changing the angular momentum of the lubricant.
