Abstract
The periodisation of economic history is always a problematical exercise, with the identification of turning points and the events that brought this about often difficult and at times arbitrary. To review developments during specific periods such as successive decades is not periodisation but what it does do is to shed light on events and developments that in time would seem to have started or ended an identifiable period of economic development.
