Abstract
INTRODUCTION : More than 4 million newborns die in the 28 first days of life and 10% of infants require resuscitation maneuvers. Two out of three deaths can be avoided if effective sanitary measures are implemented. The Apgar test measures the vitality of the newborn, so knowing the associated factors assumes great importance. OBJECTIVES : To determine the risk factors associated with low Apgar score in the Neonatal Service of the National Hospital Dos De Mayo during July 2015 to December 2016. MATERIAL AND METHODS : A case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 166 infants according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria, distributed in two groups: with and without low Apgar score at birth . RESULTS : A total of 83 cases and 83 controls completed the sample. The variables that were associated were: cesarean delivery (p = 0, OR: 7.71 [3.06 -19.43]), meconium amniotic fluid (p = 0OR: 11.89 [4.17-33.90]), anomalous presentation (p = 0, OR: 2.88 [1.03 - 8.02]) and inadequate maternal education, understood as incomplete secondary education (p = 0, OR: 4.76 [1.93-11.69]). CONCLUSIONS: Cesarean section, meconium amniotic fluid, anomalous and incomplete secondary presentation are risk factors associated with low Apgar score at birth.
