Abstract
EnglishIn Taiwan, positive references to the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) are frequent, and belong a long history. Following a phase of open violence, Japanese rule (while remaining coercive and discriminatory) grew to embody a more peaceful existence. It then broadened its social base during the Second World War. After replacing the Japanese in 1945, Chinese authorities reproduced some features of colonial rule, but failed to emulate its efficiency. In 1947, the Taiwanese revolted, drawing on the repertoires of action they had developed under colonisation. The disproportionate violence used to quell the rebellion revealed the radicalisation of Sino-Japanese enmity during the war, as well as Chinese determination to settle the island’s colonial past. francaisA Taiwan, la frequence des references positives au passe colonial japonais (1895-1945) s’enracine dans une histoire longue.
