On Language and Culture

Abstract

Since the beginning of the twentieth century when the Switish linguist F.de Saussure defined the language as a system of signs,many linguists concentrated exclusively on this system itself,who regarded it as the principal,even the only task of linguistics.Until the 50s of the 20th century,following the foundation and the development of sociolinguistics and pragmatic linguistics,the studies of the language functions were finally put on the agenda.We are not satisfied with studying the language like a closed system;on the contrary we treat it as a fact which is tremendously dependent on the society and culture.This paper aimed to make a research on the relationships between language and culture,as well as the influences of the cultural context upon the language.
