Abstract

A reconfigurable UWB antenna that meets the requirements of underlay cognitive radio is presented in this paper. This antenna is controllable to reject one or a combination of the bands dedicated for Wi-Max, C-band, WLAN and X-band that coexist within its UWB radiation into one of its fifteen band rejection modes. On the other hand, it can operate in no rejection mode that covers the entire UWB region. This 25x25x0.8 mm3 wide slot antenna with a modified circular radiator is designed to achieve a high impedance bandwidth that covers the 3.1-10.6 GHz range. Four slots, two on each metal face, are etched to create the desired band notches. A PIN diode is placed across each of these four slots to activate/deactivate band suppression. All the possible states resulting from these PIN diodes are useable in this design that it has sixteen operation modes. Good notch characteristics are proved by CST v.10 simulation results of this design. These when merged with the full use of switching states, the large number of operation modes, the variation of rejected states and the simplicity and compactness of the design, all evidence the functionality of this antenna to enhance the quality of communication within the UWB by reducing the interference in the targeted regions.
