Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and secondary infections

Abstract

S. aureus bacteremia is still a serious complication associated with a high mortality. The type of bacteremia is related to outcome and therefore, both the origin of infection and focus identification are highly important for treatment. In general, β-lactam antibiotics or, eventually, vancomycin are still the drugs of choice. The patient should be treated for 2 weeks in uncomplicated S. aureus bacteremia and longer in case of a secondary focus.
