By any set of measurements, the armed forces of colonial India had a profound impact on the form and content of colonial rule. The army was the single largest employer of Indian manpower with over 1,200,000 Indian recruits during World War I and almost twice that in World War II, making it the largest volunteer army yet seen in the world.
