Abstract
Abstract:When addiction is understood through the lens of attachment theory, the reasons group psychotherapy is the preferred modality for treatment of alcoholism, substance abuse, and the behavioral addictions become clear. The multiple relationships available in a group dilute the transference to and dependency on the therapist and also provide support for and connections with others in the same process. The group itself becomes the transitional object. Cohesion is the most important factor in the longevity of the group, and the leader must be active and more gratifying in creating cohesion when working with recovering addicts.
