Abstract

Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the famous romantic novelists of America in 19th century. The Scarlet Letter is his masterpiece which fully embodies Hawthorne's artistic feature-symbolic device.He concentrated on a few main symbols which repeatedly appear in the story.Hawthorne's symbolic style has the rich flavors of emotion and conforms to no conventional pattern.Hawthorne is praised as the most famous symbolic writer in 19th century American literature.
