Abstract

The abrasiveness of MoS2 powders is not generally a simple function of their SiO2 content, except for samples from a single source, for which a linear relationship between these two parameters is observed. The important factor in general is not merely the SiO2 content, but the actual abrasiveness of the SiO2. Removal of SiO2 with HF does not always result in negligible abrasiveness: the remaining abrasiveness is attributable to either the intrinsic abrasiveness of MoS2 or to impurities insoluble in HF, such as FeS2.
