Abstract

From about the end of the Middle Ages, the cultivation and trade of sugar was one of the most important phenomena in terms of the exchange of products, people and cultures between the Old and New World. However, the very success of sugarcane’s establishment on American soil has obscured the origins of said exchange, which had highly significant precedents in Madeira and the Canary Islands. This article elucidates the process of transmission of sugarcane culture via its written channels, associated as these were with medieval European enclaves and the islands of Macaronesia.
