Abstract

Local Use of an International Figure: the Commemoration of Francisco Ferrer in the Province of Modena (1909-1910) The essay analyzes the events of the “Tragic Week of Barcelona” and the protests for the condemnation and execution of Francisco Ferrer y Guardia in October 1909. In particular it examines the phase of transitory union between the forces of the Modenese left – socialists and revolutionary syndicalists – engaged in a “battle for commemoration”, consisting in the naming of streets and the affixing of plaques in honor of the Catalan anarchist, which pitted them against both the clerical circles and the governmental authorities.
