Exchange in South Eastern Australia: an Ethnohistorical Perspective

Abstract

An ethnohistorical perspective is applied to examine the barter system, or the exchange of goods, prevalent in the South-Eastern Australian Aboriginal societies in the 1830s and 1840s. The items exchanged are discussed, noting that the diverse and complex patterns of exchange were an essential feature of the social and political elements of the societies.
