Abstract
This text presents an overview of deafness and the education of deaf people anchored on Cultural Studies and Deaf Studies. New ways of seeing, understanding and acting were created through time that has brought different meanings and conceptions. Therefore, this paper's objective is to present deaf education through an analysis of historical aspects and legal texts until the current bilingual education scenario. It is an exploratory and bibliographic study, based on theoretical sources such as books, articles and legal texts relevant to the topic. Results point to countless challenges in education in Brazil, such as the sparse qualification of the teachers, low salaries, high rates of grade retention and evasion, among others. The education of the deaf, as seen, suffers from the same influences, added to the constructed beliefs and the social imagery, focusing on disabilities and impossibilities of deaf people.
