Diabetic Eye Care at Guthrie: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract

Treatment of macular edema, proliferative and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy has developed over the past eighteen years through carefully controlled, multicenter studies. The results of those studies, their implementation within the Guthrie system, and anticipated future directions, are described along with the pathophysiology of the underlying disease processes. Laser treatment of retinopathy can arrest vision loss but the most effective intervention is prevention through careful glycemic control.
