Abstract

There is a gender gap in mathematics among high school pupils that did not exist previously. The belief that girls dislike mathematics and are not as proficient at it as boys persists. Is it true that girls do not like mathematics and are not as good at it as boys? This survey study looked at gender disparities in secondary school students’ motivation for learning mathematics. It considered the dimensions of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and amotivation in a sample of 158 secondary school students from the Kollam district.
