A structural profile of some five-coordinate [Cu(bpy)2C1]Y complexes

Abstract

The structures of five cation distortion isomers of the five-coordinate [Cu(bpy)₂Cl]⁺ cation range from trigonal bipyramidal to square pyramidal distorted trigonal bipyramidal, restricted by the bite of the 2,2′-bipyridyl ligands. The structures may be related by a structural profile involving a linear combination of the ν₇ and ν₈ modes of vibration of a trigonal bipyramidal CuN₂N₂'Cl chromophore in C_2V symmetry.
