Abstract

The structures of five cation distortion isomers of the five-coordinate [Cu(bpy)2Cl]+ cation range from trigonal bipyramidal to square pyramidal distorted trigonal bipyramidal, restricted by the bite of the 2,2′-bipyridyl ligands. The structures may be related by a structural profile involving a linear combination of the ν7 and ν8 modes of vibration of a trigonal bipyramidal CuN2N2'Cl chromophore in C2V symmetry.
