Abstract
This research article seeks to approach the characteristics of female education in Colombia between 1832 and 1850. To this end, we propose to review whether female education projects during this period aimed at educating women and girls in order to politicize them and insert them into civilian life; or whether, on the contrary, education reinforced the ideals of what it meant to be a woman and her vital commitment to domestic life and the home. For this purpose, a historiographic and primary sources review is made, where the general aspects of education during the end of the eighteenth century to the eve of independence, and later to the early republic, are observed. This panorama of education provides elements that allow us to understand the characteristics of the specific type of education that the female gender received, as well as its material and structural difficulties that contributed to reaffirm and reproduce the Marian ideal of the woman whose only destiny is motherhood and to be the "governor" of her home. k e y w o r d s Female Education · Schools Gender and History · Family
