Abstract

Summary The St. Jerome panel of Hieronymus Bosch's triptych of the Hermit Saints in the Ducal Palace, Venice reveals an entirely new conception of the theme that unites his own Northern symbolism with Italian stylistic characteristics and motifs. In particular, comparisons with St. Jerome images by Jacopo Bellini provide compelling evidence for Leonard Slatkes’ suggestion of a Venetian journey for Bosch around 1500. This fusion of traditions combined with Bosch's creative intermingling of Jerome's temptations in the desert and the wickedness of Bosch's own world create an ingenious warning and provide a righteous example for the viewer to emulate.
