Abstract
Abstract:The author's journey to the use of self in a relational framework is explored through various theoretical and clinical paradoxes perceived en route. This article discusses the pros and cons of theory, pluralism, and how the use of self blends with and predetermines one's affinity for a theoretical model and associated approach. Clinical examples are explored through theory, the immediacy of interaction, and explicit angles of how one might use oneself clinically. In the group modality, the benefit of diverse viewpoints of the members is likened to the value of pluralism. The process in group psychotherapy is invaluable in expanding and honing the clinician's awareness of self, allowing the use of that self to be more articulated.
