Abstract
All available correlation data for naval ships painted to modern standards have been analysed, and a formula for the correlation allowance is derived; this incorporates a term based on ship length, and generally gives a value for the correlation allowance less than the figure of 0.0005 currently in general use. The impact of applying this figure to the determination of the speed-power margin is discussed; the recommended values for the margin at the various design stages are the same as those adopted in current practice.
